One of the big risks in the ministry is to be doing lots of things in exchange for doing the right things. There are so many expectations and needs
that we can stay busy forever. What's more, we can find ourselves either burning out or overcome by stress as we race through the weeks.
In thinking about the risk of busyness and the pressures on us to 'do' things I revised a familiar passage to read this way:
Beatitudes of Busyness: Now when the teacher saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down and he began to teach them, saying: I only have a minute but
listen and know that:
"Blessed are the busy, for theirs is the kingdom of the committees. Blessed are those who put in late hours, for they will look very faithful, Blessed are those who won’t say no, for they will inherit many jobs. Blessed are those who hunger & thirst for activity, for they will be filled with never ending demands. Blessed are those who long for more to do, for they will be given pats on the back and Much, much more. Blessed are those who are persecuted because of not getting everything done, for theirs is chance to work harder to make everything all right. Blessed are you when people notice you, recruit you and falsely say that you have all kinds of gifts, that you may or may not have, rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in the congregation and many are the possibilities before you, for in the same way they treated the busy who were before you. (by Steve Wallace)
Remember to focus on the calling Christ has given to you and not what every voices asks, demands or even commands you to do. Remember to make time for family for our first calling is to them. Remember to watch for the unexpected opportunities and needs God brings to you. We are to make our schedules the best we can
and then be open to what God wants us to do.
