7 World Communion Sunday Possibilities

The first week in October each year is the celebration of.....? World Communion Sunday is a time when we

celebrate how God makes us one. In many churches this special event is kept to the worship service but here are

some options to expand this focus on the unity Christ brings.

1. Encourage people to share a meal the week before October 5th with a few other Christians.

Perhaps even help organize groups for this one event.  During the meal raise questions like these:

What is your first memory of Communion?

What is your most prized memory of the Lord’s Supper?

What is the most humorous experience/memory of Communion?

What do you feel/think is the most important message of the Lord’s Supper?

World Communion Sunday is to show our unity in Christ, what do you value or what have

            you learned from another denomination?

How have you seen churches work together?

What would you love to see churches do together?

What can you do to bring more unity to your church and to Christ’s Body?

Close the time with prayer for Christ’s unity to be made more evident and divisions healed.  Also

ask for forgiveness for the ways we have broken the unity (joking about other groups, etc.) and

guidance for what Christ wants to do through/in us.

2. Offer a 24 hour prayer vigil with Communion available for people to take as they come and go.

During this prayer vigil have cards made up with prayers for Christian in other lands.  Perhaps have

each hour focus on a specific time zone(s) (http://www.timezonecheck.com  or http://www.worldtimezone.com)

around the world and the countries/cities in that area of the world.

3. Do a prayer walk/drive where you go as a group and pray for the Spirit to work in and through the other

churches around you.  I would contact these churches before just showing up so that there is not a

misunderstanding of what you are doing or your motive for doing it.  In this contact you might ask for specific

requests from the pastor for you to pray about.  Also you could send a card to the members of these and other

churches expressing your care and prayer for them.

4. Go to nursing homes, retirement centers and to the homebound and offer communion to the residents and their families.

5. Print up cards with the Words of Institution (I Corinthians 11: 23-28) on them.

23  For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night

he was betrayed, took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said,

"This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me." 25 In the same way,

after supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this,

whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me." 26 For whenever you eat this bread and

drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes. 27 Therefore, whoever eats

the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning

against the body and blood of the Lord. 28 A man ought to examine himself before he eats

of the bread and drinks of the cup.

Invite members to read the card each day (maybe even in the morning, during lunch and in the

evening) for the week before October 5  and journal the thoughts or feelings that come to mind.

6. Use special elements for the loaf and cup.  Perhaps offer wine if you never use it or have a group meet

earlier in the week and make the bread for the service.  Perhaps use this time to talk about what the bread

and cup that Jesus used were like and what they meant in the Passover celebration.

7. Do a special service project for another church or do a project with another church. It doesn’t need to be

elaborate.  If you do one together (e.g. be host/hostess at the local mall food court, pick up trash along a

street or area) you can each wear t-shirts from the respective churches which shows the unity in the diversity.
